Menorca, an unexpected paradise for gastronomy and wine

Latest news

Discovering the local cuisine is one of the most rewarding experiences when travelling. This experience goes hand in hand with discovering delicious local wines to pair with food. However, in the case of Menorca, stunning beaches, cultural festivals, horses and archaeology come to mind and we don’t necessarily associate the island with gastronomy. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth and is vouched for by the award for European Region of Gastronomy 2022 by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT). For this reason, gastronomic tourism has become a powerful draw to the island for visitors.

It goes without saying that Menorcan cheese is the island’s star product. What many visitors don’t know is that its best pairing is the excellent local wine. This peaceful and natural island, which revolves around «slow food» is a place where wine production is sustainable, and handmade artisan processes are still used along with many traditional techniques.

Vines were already a popular crop in Roman times (still reflected in the deep archaeological footprint of the island) until the 19th century. The arrival of diseases such as phylloxera and the departure of the English caused this decline. However, since the end of the 20th century, the industry has been revived. This led to the denomination in 2005 of Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca. This wine is made from the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Tempranillo, Syrah (red wine) and Chardonnay, Macabeu, Malvasia, Moscatel, Perellada and Moll (white wine) grape varieties. White wines, representing the majority of its product, are renowned for their unique fruity flavour. In total, the island is home to nine wineries where you can visit, taste and/or buy this excellent product. You can pair this experience with a visit to a cheese making farm, called llocs in the local language. Take a different souvenir home and surprise your loved ones with a special gift. Let’s toast to discovering an island with a huge diversity of hidden secrets.
